He spent most of his childhood at La Haye, with his brother Pierre and sister Jeanne. His father remarried and René had a half-brother, Joachim, and a half-sister, Anne. When he was a child he was sick and people bullied him. His mother said he should learn math. Not much is known about his early childhood, but René is thought to have been a sickly and fragile child.
